JEMS offers an ecological and supportive end-of-life solution for its computers.

Ecology and computer solidarity

Where and how can a company in the Île-de-France region recycle its old computer? Several charities collect these devices – whether working or not – and recondition them. At JEMS, employees are encouraged to take initiatives to benefit charities.

Recycling: a resource saving for the planet

Indeed, ecology is no longer a passing fad, and the issue of carbon footprint is at the heart of discussions. Did you know that the manufacture of a laptop? Their extraction generally has disastrous consequences for the environment as it requires a lot of energy, resources, and water too. In this case, we speak of «imported pollution*» as it does not often originate from France, at a time when we are increasingly concerned. To give you an idea, the manufacture of a computer requires on average:

  • 240kg of fossil fuels
  • 22 kg of chemicals
  • 1.5 tonnes of water.

Furthermore, the think tank The Shift Project detail in his report de juillet 2019 that digital pollution represents 4 % of global greenhouse gases. To give an idea of the scale, if the Internet were a country, it would be the 3rd largest consumer of electricity in the world, behind China and the United States.

There is a real energy imbalance where greenhouse gas emissions are concentrated primarily during the early stages of a device's life. For a smartphone, this can represent up to 90 % of emissions! In 2020, JEMS set itself sustainability commitments through the implementation of a corporate social responsibility strategy integrated into company policy.

An association that facilitates social integration

The POLE S association echoes the values promoted by JEMS. Its main mission is to introduce «La French Tech» to deprived neighbourhoods at a time when the digital sector is hiring extensively.

During the lockdown period in March 2020, the Pole S association, which manages the Web School in Poissy (Yvelines), lent about fifteen laptops to families in the Beauregard and La Coudraie districts who needed them.

Having been involved in the fight against social exclusion for over 30 years, PoleS offers short, certified training courses, aimed at a diverse range of individuals, regardless of their prior educational attainment.

The pedagogy relies on peer exchange and practice, to better grasp the foundations and tools of the profession. It is held in person, through synchronous learning, and is accessible to people with disabilities. At the end of the work integration project, trainees pass the double professional certification issued by WebForce3:

  • Web Integration Techniques (CPF Code 235494)
  • Web development techniques (CPF code 236654)

75% des stagiaires ont obtenu la double certification, et 80% au moins une certification.

These interns need to be welcomed by companies for practical internships lasting 2 months (not continuous, 1 month and 1 month at the end of the training) over the 10 months; it's not easy for them to find companies to support them.
