International Women's Day: a non-event at JEMS?

What is International Women's Day?

8th March is the International Women's Day. It all started with women's demonstrations in several countries, notably in the United States, demanding better working conditions, the right to vote, and so on. Then, on 8 March 1977, the UN officially established International Women's Rights Day.

This day is an opportunity to promote the fight for women's rights and, in particular, for respect for equal treatment between women and men. The celebration of International Women's Rights Day raises public awareness of the obstacles that women continue to face, including gender-based violence, pay inequality, limited access to education and healthcare, and under-representation in positions of responsibility. This day also acknowledges the contributions and achievements of women in various fields, including computing.

Where are we today?

  • In the world :
    • 0 countries have achieved gender equality to date (it would take 100 years to achieve it).
  • In France :
    • Only 1 in 5 mayors is a woman
    • 99 % des femmes disent avoir été victimes d’un acte ou comportement sexiste

La journée internationale des droits des femmes est concernée par la data de plusieurs manières importantes.

Because we know that algorithms are gendered! You only have to look at what's being said online about the ethics of algorithms:

What does JEMS do?

For several years, we have been working to make gender equality a stronger commitment than ever. In 2023, our actions allowed us to reach a EGAPRO score of 94/100. We raise awareness and train our employees to make women's and men's equality effective and real on a daily basis, in their professional and personal lives.

Le secteur de l’IT est fortement impacté par l’inégalité femmes-hommes ; en effet seulement 24% des femmes sont ingénieurs dans ce secteur. JEMS subit cette inégalité sans pour autant l’appliquer dans ses pratiques. All female employees at JEMS are treated equally to male employees, with identical promotions and pay rises.

This day of struggle for women's rights shouldn't exist; women shouldn't have a single day of recognition in the year; women shouldn't have to fight to achieve what men have by right; women should be women without having to worry about not being equal to men. It is with this way of thinking and acting what progress we are making at JEMS.

Over the last 10 years, the exclusion of women from the digital world has also represented a shortfall of about $1 trillion for the GDP of low- and middle-income countries – a loss that, if left unaddressed, could reach $1.5 trillion by 2025.

Investing in women benefits everyone, communities, and countries.

At JEMS, we don't need a single day to celebrate those who are part of our daily lives and bring us so much value. Together, it is possible to create a more just society by working hand in hand to build a more inclusive and prosperous society for the benefit of women, girls, men, and boys worldwide.
