Migrate a data platform to Google Cloud to reduce costs and preserve business functions

Sephora has undertaken the complete migration of its on-premise data platform to Google Cloud Platform, along with all associated data and use cases. The challenge was twofold: to modernise the technological foundation within a constrained timeframe and to preserve key uses related to customer knowledge, personalisation, and data governance without disruption.

The existing platform already required significant maintenance, demonstrating the complexity of the migration project and the associated need for simplification.

The project

Our approach

JEMS supported Sephora by leveraging its in-depth knowledge of the existing platform, which it had initially helped to build, as well as the Google Cloud target chosen by the client's IT department. The intervention involved migrating data, processes, and use cases without service interruption, while limiting technical debt and accelerating deployment through generic job logic.

The diagnosis

The migration represented a large-scale undertaking, as the data platform had existed for several years, already supported numerous processes and relied on an environment whose licences were nearing expiry. Sephora therefore had to quickly migrate all the data and associated use cases, without degrading the service, while controlling costs and preparing a more robust foundation for its digital transformation.

The key deliverables

  • Full migration of the Hadoop platform to Google Cloud Platform
  • Resumption of customer data, CRM, purchasing, logistics and other business data
  • Migration of existing use cases related to personalisation, 360° view and recommendation engine
  • Implementation of generic job logic to speed up deployment
  • Setting up a robust and scalable technical foundation for data teams
  • Strengthening data quality, traceability and governance

The benefits

A secure migration

Sephora was able to switch to Google Cloud Platform while maintaining existing use cases without service interruption.

Greatly reduced costs

The new platform allows for a 4-fold reduction in infrastructure and licensing costs.

A better centralised customer knowledge

The project is part of a strategy for de-siloing and centralising customer data into a unique warehouse.

A stronger foundation for data teams

The target platform has been designed to offer a scalable environment for Sephora's Data Scientists and Data Miners.

Enhanced data governance

The migration has also enabled the implementation of a stronger approach to data quality, traceability, and governance.
